Olivia Burrows' Top Wedding Day Tips

We sat down with Olivia Burrows Sutherland to get the inside scoop on planning a perfect European inspired wedding.

Posted on 4 May, 2023

What did you think you’d need on the day but didn’t use in the end?

This is a great question! I have to be honest and say nothing. I took on the role of wedding planner and during the planning stages it was paramount to me that nothing went to waste and everything had it’s own purpose. We really did use everything which I’m thrilled about.

If you had a high school Pinterest wedding board – can we see some of your highlights?

***(I actually didn’t have one! Crazy I know!)***

Where did you get your wedding inspiration from?

We really wanted our wedding to have a European, vacation feel. I found the majority of my inspiration from magazines, social media and industry leaders.

In terms of aesthetics, I really wanted to achieve a timeless, airy and elegant feel with a nod to Italian artistry. The wedding property itself is colourful with hues of rendered pink and blues and so I wanted every other piece of styling to be classic, white and minimal to allow the venue to shine. I then wanted there to be a shift to a sophisticated night-luxe / glitz and glam aesthetic in the evening.

And in terms of the experience, having an interstate wedding meant we really wanted tocreate a specific ambiance that allowed our guests to feel relaxed and in “holiday-mode” throughout the entire duration of our wedding weekend.

Do you have a favourite moment from your wedding?

I definitely have three stand out moments.

The first being when I walked down the aisle, as I have never felt anything like it. I felt an immense amount of nerves which soon transformed into pure excitement as soon as I saw Lockie’s face.

The second being the moment we kissed as husband and wife. It was such a surreal feeling.

And finally, the entire duration of pouring the champagne tower which seamlessly turned into our first dance which then instantly started the dancefloor. That series of events was something I had envisioned for years and it was without a doubt the most electric part of the entire day.

How did you curate your guest list?

The curation of our guest list was fairly straightforward. The friends and family we have in our lives are all people we love and cherish, therefore it truly was an easy process.

We prioritised choosing a venue that could cater for the amount of guests we had listed, instead of deciding on a guest number based on the venue capacity.

Did you feel an added pressure with your wedding becoming so viral on social media?

I have to admit that I did feel a little bit of pressure because I had documented our wedding journey on my socials for months, however it didn’t impact my decisions. Lockie and I were both extremely set on doing things our way and not being influenced by external opinions.

Through documenting my journey on social media, I have found a new passion for content creation within the events space which is how my new company, Olivia & Living was born. I am so excited to be offering premium content creation services for events, including: weddings, engagements and corporate, during a time where many brides are searching for a credible wedding day content creator.

Did you expect your DIY table numbers to go so viral?

The table numbers were so fun to create. I assumed people would be interested in the creation process as it’s so simple and affordable, and the results are beautiful. They definitely align with the trending ethereal, textural aesthetic which just so happens to be my personal interior design style too. I think they are an intriguing addition to create depth and texture to any tablescape.

Regarding the virality, I definitely wasn’t expecting to reach over 3 million people across my socials with this diy creation, but I’m thrilled to offer an affordable alternative for other brides to use themselves.

Wedding prep is almost like a full time job in itself – do you have any advice for those trying to balance normal life and wedding mania?

It really is, especially if you have decided to be your own wedding planner. I think having designated days to complete your research and admin tasks is really helpful.

Excel was my best friend and where I documented everything from timelines, to finances, to meeting notes. Set yourself up with a solid template prior to the commencement of your planning. Ultimately, I absolutely love planning and coordinating events so I did find this process extremely enjoyable for the majority of the time.

When picking your wedding shoes – what features were a must for you? (i.e. low heel, ankle strap)

I’m 4’11” and so I’ve worn relatively high heels since being a teenager. I knew I wanted shoes with height and a stiletto heel but I surprised myself when I chose shoes with a lot of sparkle.

I definitely wanted a pair of “wow” shoes for both my ceremony and reception look. The Kyla was the perfect reception shoe as it had the ankle strap to keep my feet secure and glittered so much on the dance floor.

However, for my bridesmaids, I chose a low heeled pump for their ceremony shoes as I wanted to ensure they were all comfortable during the day and then they all chose a pair of sparkly heels from the Tony Bianco collection for their reception look. It was such a fun moment when we all got changed together and they all absolutely loved their shoes.

9. What are your thoughts on a change of shoes for the day?

I’m all for it! Whether it’s for a different look or for comfort, I highly recommend it.

We decided on a shoe change as I find great joy in styling different pieces together and creating new looks, and so I simply couldn’t help myself. As soon as I decided on my second dress, I knew I wanted my bridesmaids to share the experience with me. They all had the choice of a Shona Joy mini dress in cream, as I felt this really aligned with the evening glam / night luxe style I was going for, and the dresses were also extremely comfortable and perfect for dancing in. To tie their entire reception look together, the bridesmaids also wore their chosen pair of crystal earrings. It definitely transformed the vibe from airy and elegant to glitz and glam.
